Ruston has made many short films, including in partnership with organizations such as The World Health Organization, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and The Recovery Café.
As a Fulbright Scholar Ruston made films about community mental health workers in India. In addition, she has made short films about cross-cultural medicine, opioid addiction, psychiatric advance directives, and others.
